Course Overview

The Entry Level Awards in Mathematics Skills are designed to provide learners with a flexible route to developing the skills in Mathematics which will enable them to build confidence and provide a foundation for further study towards a GCSE in Mathematics, a Functional Skill in Mathematics, a move into employment or as a stepping stone to higher level study. Learners will gain knowledge of using the following at the appropriate level:

·         Whole number and fractions

·         Decimals and percentages

·         Common measures

·         Shape and space

·         Data and statistical measures

Completion of the Entry Level Awards in Mathematics Skills does not mean that the learner has reached full competence across the mathematics curriculum at the level achieved, but it does show that the learner has made significant progress in improving competence in specific areas and recognises the first steps of the journey that the learner needs to make in order to progress to further study in mathematics or into employment.

The qualifications link to the Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum and are underpinned by the national standards for Adult Numeracy. The qualifications allow the development of learners’ skills, so they have the underpinning knowledge to progress onto Functional Skills qualifications.


There are no formal entry requirements for learners undertaking these qualifications. Learners will range from those with emerging skills in mathematics to those who are starting to apply their developing knowledge and skills to everyday situations.
16 years and over


valid passport (any nationality);
signed UK photo card driving license;
valid warrant card issued by HM Forces, Police;
Other photographic ID card, e.g. valid warrant card issued by HM Forces, Police and employee ID card, student ID card, travel card. 
In the event that a learner is unable to produce any of the forms of photographic identification listed above, a Centre may accept another form of identity containing a signature, for example a credit card or a third-party representative, such as a Line Manager, Human Resources Manager or invigilator, will be accepted.
